Our northern-lights packages start in the autumn since this is one of the best times of year for seeing the lights.
At this time, we have a range of 2-day and week-long packages which focus on looking for the lights.
Most of our aurora hunting autumn packages are designed over the course of a week since the longer the period of time you spend with us, the more likely it is that you will get to experience the magic of the aurora.
However, we also offer shorter packages for those for whom aurora chasing is just one of the many arctic activities that you are keen to try.
Whilst no-one can ever guarantee the aurora, we can always guarantee a great experience looking for northern lights!
By the time winter comes, our focus is primarily on short and multiday husky tours although we do also offer northern lights snowmobile tours. The multiday tours in particular journey far out into the wilderness and in our 2016-17 season, nearly all of our 5-day groups experienced at least one day of amazing northern lights far from civilisation.
Aurora Hunting in the Autumn: Why?
The arctic is often forgotten in the warmer, snowless months when there are still leaves on the trees and you can easily go for a dip in the lake after overheating yourself in a sauna. Autumn-time in northern Finland is lovely for hiking through fells with various shades of ‘ruska’ and listening to the silence of nature without too great a worry of freezing to your core. Most importantly, autumn is one of the most pleasant times of year to view the northern lights as each dark night grows longer and the stars come out for beautiful photo opportunities.
Autumn starts with spectacular blazing colours as far as your eyes can see, and then the hoar frosts come with the freezing nights, patterning the very ground you walk across. Leaves and then trees are dusted and then laden with crystalising powder until the whole landscape sparkles. Changes can be gradual or overnight and temperatures can fluctuate 20 degrees in a day so each day you can approach the landscape with a new lens, and new expectations.
Add to this the early nights which make it easier to see the northern lights and glittering lakes in which capture their reflections, and it is easy to see why this is one of the best times of year to enjoy this natural phenomenum.
What aurura package options are available in Autumn?
Some of our aurora packages are multi-activity packages in which you experience the best of the arctic in the late mornings and afternoons and search for the aurora at night. Others are focused on afternoon activities with the dogs (whether hiking or quad-training) and evening activities searching for the aurora. The final packages are constructed around more physical wilderness journeys either by foot, bike or on the rivers, which allow you to journey through the wild landscapes of the north and to see the aurora in the midst of arctic nature. There is a 2-day, 4-day and 7-day option with most of the packages.
