Whole-Day and Half-Day Adventure Packages

We offer half-day and full-day adventure packages on our farm in winter which combine the husky side of our business, some survival school tasks and a chance to try your hand at some classic winter sports.

We have a range of activities that can be adapted to the number in your group and the range of ages taking part. Suggestions for adult groups are made, below.

Winter Adventure Mornings

This morning involves both snowshoeing and time with the dogs. At the start of your morning adventure we kit you out in snowshoes and take you on a beautiful 1.5km hike through nature to the dog farm. Once there, you can leave snowshoes behind you for a while, so that you can meet the dogs, play with the pups and see how well you do (with them) on our puppy agility course.

You are probably thirsty by this stage, so we will teach you how to make a fire the Finnish way (if you are interested) when we stop for a quick hot juice and snack break within a traditional kota (teepee).

We will then prepare a team of dogs with you and head out onto the marsh so that you can either experience our six kilometer loop with your own team or play with your sleigh / quad on our GEE HAW training tracks within the farm routes. Once back at the farm, you will help us to put them back in their kennels, learning more about the dogs along the way.

NB: You may also get a chance to drive the snowmobile that will have been accompanying you for safety back up to the house with one of the guides - but those kind of incidental adventures, we will play by ear.

Duration: c. 10am - 1.30pm
Price: Adult, €135. Children, €90.
Availability: This is a product that we primarily offer in spring when the tracks and snow-conditions are good and we are not so busy with the dogs.

Winter Adventure day

In a winter adventure day you will essentially get to try a combination of snow-shoeing and / or cross country skiing, mushing and snowmobiling and we may have time to also give you a skijoring demonstration if you like. You will also be able to join in, with the guides, with the evening feed. This product differs from our 'day in the life of a husky guide' in that it is more about an introduction to a variety of winter sports, including dog sledding, rather than a focus on the kind of work we do with the dogs.

On the morning snowshoe walk, we will head far out onto the marshes on a hidden ridge close to our land and then head back, across country, until we hit one of our mushing tracks. Breaking trail can be quite hard work after a fresh snowfall, but there will be no rest for the weary since we will then head straight out with the teams to experience one of the longer day-length safari routes before lunch.

Lunch will be spent at a lakeside cabin on the far shores of Lake Ounasjarvi. You will see why Finns are expert fire-makers, since preparing a fire and heating up a cabin is always the first duty when arriving at a wilderness base.

After lunch, we will head back to the farm and put the dogs away. If you still have energy to spare, this will be your chance to try out cross country skiing on the track network that we also use for training our dogs. Those of you with sufficient skill can experience the art of skijoring (skiing whilst attached to one of our dogs) for the first time.

If you are not sufficiently skilled to try this out for yourself, one of the guides will give you a demonstration as to how we use skijoring as a training tool - particularly with trainee leaders - at this time of year.

If you wish to stay for the evening feed at the end of your jam-packed activity day, you will be more than welcome. NB: We would chose a slightly different snowshoeing route for family groups and we would have to know shoe-sizes ahead of time in order for children to be able to take part in the cross country skiing part of the day.

Duration: c. 10am - 5pm
Price: Adults, €195. Children, €150.

Availability: This is a product that we primarily offer in spring when the tracks and snow-conditions are good and we are not so busy with the dogs.

Saami Cultural Package

This is one of three activity-packages that we primarily offer to our multiday safari clients on their free days. These days do not include husky mushing since our multiday clients generally want to try something new.

The cultural package includes a 3-hour reindeer farm visit, an hour to play with the dogs of your choice back at our farm, an accompanied visit to the local saami nature centre, and an evening of fun at a private sauna cabin where you will be challenged to try the ancient ritual of ice-hole swimming.

An outing to Juhl's Silver Gallery in the Norwegian Saami village of Kautokeno may be possible to fit in, for an additional fee:

Price: Adults, €120. Children, €85.

Price Includes: Booking of the individual activities and transfers to and from the reindeer farm, Nature Centre, and Ice-Hole Experience Location.
Mininum Number of Participants: 4
Duration: 4

Arctic Sports Package for Multiday Clients

This is the second of three activity-packages that we primarily offer to our multiday safari clients on their free days. These days do not include husky mushing since our multiday clients generally want to try something new.

This arctic sports day package includes a 20km snowmobile ride, (small children need to sit in a sleigh if their legs are not long enough to reach the foot-rest in order to ride pillion), a 1 hour snowshoe tour, and an option to try one out of XC skiing, the fat-bikes or our fat-maxes (we will guide you as to the best option once we know your children).

You can relieve your tired muscles at the end of the day by spending the evening relaxing between a private sauna and ice hole.

Price: Adults, €195. Children, €150.
Mininum Number of Participants: 4

Farm Doggy Day (Post Multiday Tour)

This is the third of three activity-packages that we primarily offer to our multiday safari clients on their free days. (These days do not necessarily include husky mushing since our multiday clients generally want to try something new..although we may well run an oldie team or two).

This package simply covers the cost of a hotel-farm transfer from a local hotel, and lunch. You are welcome to join us for as much of our working day as you wish.

FYI: This is a completely different offer from our winter adventure day or 'day in the life of a husky guide' product since in this case, we are primarily working with people who have already been around the dogs and on the farm for a number of days, who are comfortable with either doing their own thing with the dogs (cuddling / brushing / adding bedding to kennels etc) or willing to carry out tasks that require minimal supervision (oldie walking, puppy playtime etc).

We will have someone on the farm at all times whilst you are there, but they are likely to be focusing on their own projects. Of course, if we are carrying out tasks in which we can use another pair of hands, there may be a chance to be involved in nail cutting / dog-weighing / dog medical checks / walking oldies or even basic training.

Price: €30
Price Includes: Transfers to and from your hotel and lunch at the farm
Mininum Number of Participants: 1

Other Adventure Suggestions for Free Days in Hetta

Why not have your own mini adventure whilst in Hetta for a day?

All of Hetta's many ski tracks are described in the location section of our website. Our top tip in early winter for beginners would be to try the section of illuminated track that heads out from the nature centre and then to see if you can ski to the school in town and back (or to complete the 10km illuminated trail from the back of the downtown hotels if you are slightly more advanced). Our top tip in Spring would be to head across the lake to the Pyhäkero cabin for a hot chocolate and then return.

If skiing sounds too daunting, then grab some snowshoes and follow the snowmobile trail to the Pyhäkero cabin instead. Or, if you have a car, head up the radar station road and snowshoe along the high trails with panoramic views towards Sisanki kota.

Fat biking is quite hard work in deep winter but on hard spring trails it becomes fun again. And, of course, you can always choose an E-fat bike (eg from us) or an E-fat enduro (eg from the nature centre) and give it a go. We have a number of suggested trails but for the experienced biker, biking to Sioskuru or around the Phatajarvi bike trail are potential options with an E-fat in a day.

A more sedentary option (yes, such things are possible in Hetta!) would be to simply head to the nature centre and enjoy both the permanent and ever-changing exhibition spaces and then to have lunch in the wonderful Cafe Peura. The Jyppyra hill is just behind the nature centre so you could always pop up (a small 10 min, 700m hike) to the top with some matches, sausages and marshmallows and make a cosy fire around which you can enjoy the panoramic view of the surrounding area.

If you would like, as a group, to go ice-hole swimming, we can also organise that for you for €20pp.
